What do you do when you lose your passion?

Hello everyone! I know that I am a day late, however! for what it’s worth, I actually did have the blog post (hand)written yesterday, and just wasn’t able to actually type it up and post it! That kinda counts, right? I’m going with yes. Anyways, today I want to talk to you about something that I’ve noticed reoccurring in my life—lack of passion, and in some cases, it just feels completely gone.

So what can you do when this burnout occurs? In truth, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to combatting this feeling, what I do may, or may not, help you! With that being said, I would still like to share with you my process of rediscovering my passion for my hobbies.

Let Go

Let go of any pressure that you’re putting on yourself. Whether its perfectionism, or something else entirely, unnecessary pressure is bound to ruin what should be an otherwise fun experience. I know that I am most guilty of this when I am making a gift for someone else, as if…if it’s not perfect, its not good enough to give as a gift.

Evaluate

Evaluate your situation, ask yourself why you’re even doing this in the first place. For fun? For money? What’s your why, and is it still worth it? If you’re like me, and you make stuff, you probably like to try your hand at making the latest trends. If so, you’ll understand me when I say that this was me with those epoxy tumblers. I was asked to make one, I agreed, and found out that I absolutely hated it! I finished the order, but never again. It just wasn’t something that I enjoyed, and that is more than okay. There are plenty of other people out there who love it, so that I don’t have to.

Stop

No really, just stop. If you find that you’re forcing yourself to pursue your passions or hobbies, take a break. In fact, take as long as you need, a few days, a few weeks…months…years…only you will know how much of a break you’ll need. For me, this was scrapbooking. About eleven years ago I started scrapbooking and absolutely loved it! I’d stay up late working on layouts, I’d spend hours on these pages…as you can imagine, I hit burnout pretty quickly. So fast, actually, that I stopped for almost ten years! Yes, you read that right! ALMOST 10 YEARS! Almost three years ago my aunt had a baby, and I decided that I was going to make a scrapbook for her documenting the baby’s first year of life. While it took me a lot longer than it would have nine years ago, I slowly made progress, and you know what I found out? I found out that after all this time, I still enjoyed scrapbooking, and that I just needed to pace myself! Now, I don’t really know if I needed all of that time away, but the fact of the matter still stands, don’t be afraid to take a break!

Usually, after considering these three things, I am able to reignite the flame. (I’m looking at you, soapmaking.) Just remember, it’s okay if you need more than a few days to fall back in love with your passions and/or hobbies!

xoxo
