13 Ways to Get in the Halloween Mood

Hi everyone!

I am so thrilled to be sharing this post with y'all. Much like the name suggests, I have 13 things for you to do to get you as hyped up for Halloween as I am. Since there's officially thirteen more days until Halloween, I figured now would be the perfect time to release my list!

Read on to get my take on costume ideas, recipes, decorations, and more!

1. To kick this list off right, my starting suggestion is that you check out Freeform's 31 Nights of Halloween, SyFy's 31 Days of Halloween, and AMC's FearFest for all of your Halloween and horror faves. Freeform definitely has the more "family-friendly" lineup...even mixing in non-Halloween and/or scary movies (aka Frozen).'' Just a FYI...Hocus Pocus turns 25 this year, and Freeform has it in the line up a few times, so don't miss out!

2. Attend a Halloween party! With Halloween being on a Wednesday this year, there are sure to be tons of people you know hosting little shindigs a couple of weeks before. Don't know anyone hosting a party? Host one yourself!

3. Speaking of parties, let's talk about the food! Fun and creepy food is a must for every Halloween party. There's so many different recipes out there, but my favorites are the ones that take your everyday foods and spookify them. One of my all time favorites is dirt pudding that is made to look like a little pumpkin patch, or when the cups are individually decorated to look like little monsters. You can find a recipe for dirt pudding here.

4. If you're not much of a cook, try out this neat jack-o-lantern pizza from Papa Murphy's. If you're not familiar with Papa Murphy's, it is a take-and-bake pizza shop where you purchase an uncooked pizza to cook at home, and it is definitely worth checking out if you have one nearby! Here's before-and-after cooking shots of what the jack-o-lantern pizza looks like.

5. Now that we've covered food, let's talk about decor! Dollar Tree has a ton of quirky decor that is not only cheap, but is actually pretty awesome. I'm talking severed hands, fingers, feet, plastic eyeballs, creepy cloth and spiderwebs...they even have foam tombstones! I highly recommend checking out their selection, especially if you want to save a buck. If you're super crafty, check out Pinterest for their endless options of DIY decorations!

6. Go to a haunted house! The city that I live in normally has a haunted hayride, but because of all the rain that we've been getting lately they're moving it indoors and making it into a haunted house! I haven't been to a haunted house in several years, so I'm really excited to check this out.

7. Speaking of haunted houses...check out Netflix's Haunting of Hill House. This series has been adapted from the 1959 novel with the same name by author Shirley Jackson. It's only a total of 10 episodes, but the show has quickly gained a lot of popularity--even horror novelist Stephen King has said that the show is "close to a work of genius".

8. If you think that the Haunting of Hill House might be a little too scary for you, check out The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell, which is also on Netflix. This show is a a delightful hybrid of a sitcom and a baking show all mashed into one. If you're wondering how that works exactly...CHECK IT OUT! There's currently 6 episodes and they're pretty entertaining.

9. Paint your nails in a festive holiday manner. See the photo below to check out how I decided to have mine done. While there isn't anything overtly Halloween about this polish, I thought it was perfect! I mean, can you ever go wrong with black and glitter?!

10. Take a trip to your local movie theater and treat yourself to the newest rendition of Halloween. After all, what's more Halloween-y than Halloween itself? This flick hits theaters today, Friday the 19th. The Halloween franchise is, hands down, one of my most favorite movie franchises ever.

11. Carve a pumpkin! If you're like me, you tend to wait a little closer to Halloween to actually carve my pumpkin. Why? Because you obviously want its face to hold up, of course! A fun alternative to carving pumpkins would be decorating a foam pumpkin. This method has a ton of pros, too. You won't have any gross pumpkin-gut mess to clean up for starters, and you can even keep and store your pumpkin for next year.

12. If you haven't finalized your costume by now (no shade, I'm in the same boat!), here's a few tips:

  • Check out makeup artists on Instagram. Right now they're all posting Halloween inspired make-up ideas, and a few of them are even posting costume make-up ideas too!
  • Look in your closet to see if you have anything to make a last minute (or super cheap!) costume. Have a white dress? See if you have any accessories that you can use to transform yourself into Wilma Flintstone or Marilyn Monroe. Have a black dress? See if you have accessories to be Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's. My point is: see what you have before you stress yourself out by rushing out to buy a full on costume.
  • If all else fails, see what you can do with a tutu. Believe me, there's more options than being a ballerina. One plain yellow tutu and a matching yellow t-shirt can turn you into Pikachu, a rubber ducky, or even a bumble bee!

13. Last but not least...get everything ready to go trick-or-treating or take your children, younger siblings, nieces and nephews, or cousins! Don't forget your handy-dandy flashlight (check your batteries!) and candy collecting receptacle.

I hope you enjoyed reading my list of 13 Ways to Get in the Halloween Mood as much as I enjoyed compiling it! What's your favorite thing to do around Halloween? Let me know in the comments below!

Until next time,
